Lopez, a migrant worker, was born in Mission Hills, Los Angeles, California, on April 23, 1961. Anatasio and Frieda Lopez are his parents. He is of Mexican descent. He was raised by his maternal grandparents, factory worker Benita Gutierrez and builder Refugio Gutierrez, when his mother and father abandoned him when he was 10 years old and two months old, respectively. Lopez earned his high school diploma from San Fernando in 1979.

Lopez performed standup comedy all around Los Angeles (and the United States) for years before he first became famous in the city courtesy of a notable morning radio show he hosted on 92.3 FM in the 1990s.
